Choosing the Hotel
Just had a fantastic stay at InterContinental Yokohama Pier 8. My family and I are not used to staying in luxury hotels, and it took me a few days to research and decide that this is the hotel in Japan I would really like to try staying a night in during this 4-week long stay in Japan.
First Impressions
This luxury hotel in Japan charmed us with its location, the layout of the room, and how the interior of the hotel was constructed and decorated. Perhaps we have not stayed in many beautiful, luxurious hotels, so this really wowed these 3 commoners.
Arrival and Location
We took a 20-minute slow stroll (the usual walk will take about 13 minutes) from the nearest train station to the hotel. We were just mesmerized by the peaceful and beautiful Minatomirai oceanfront. The strong ocean breeze delighted our faces while we inched towards the hotel. This hotel should not be confused with the InterContinental Yokohama Grand Hotel, which is a 5-7 minute walk from this hotel. The former was significantly cheaper than the Pier 8 hotel.
Nearby Attractions
The location is superb, with the Cup Noodles Museum, several shopping malls, pier, the famous Yokohama Ferris wheel, and a small amusement center just within walking distance of the hotel. In the same building, there are lots of eateries to choose from and a pretty 7-Eleven store.

Hotel Security and Check-In
The security of the hotel is pretty good. You will need to have the room pass to be able to gain access to the hotel. We checked in around 11 am and were warmly welcomed by a team of friendly and polite guest relations. My Elite Platinum membership was recognized, and I was given a choice of 600 points or 1 welcome drink at the lounge. I asked for 3 since there were 3 of us but was gently declined, which I accepted without a fuss. I was also given a ¥2000 credit offset against additional hotel expenses.
Room and Upgrade
We were also given a late check-out of 4 pm without request, and we are very happy to receive this offer. My initial booking for a Harbourfront view double bedroom was changed to a single king-size bed with the Minatomirai Oceanview room.
Enjoying the Stay
On the 2nd day, we spent a few hours enjoying the ocean breeze from the full-height opened window. It was indeed a memorable stay for us.
Overall Experience
My rating for the experience is 9.5/10.
We spent ¥52,186 for a Harbourfront view double bedroom with breakfast and changed to a king-size bed with a better view.
