The Marriott Bonvoy program allows members to transfer points to and from a variety of partners, including credit card programs, airlines, hotel programs and other unique partnerships.

In this guide, transfer options are divided into two main categories: points transfer partners to Marriott Bonvoy and points transfer partners from Marriott Bonvoy.

Universal Credit Card Programs

Several major credit card programs allow you to transfer points to Marriott Bonvoy:

  • American Express Membership Rewards
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • Bilt Rewards

Transfer American Express Points to Marriott

You can transfer American Express Membership Rewards to Bonvoy points with a 1:1 conversion rate

The American Express ecosystem includes more than 10 credit cards with the ability to earn points in the Rewards Program. They range from cards with no annual fee, such as the Amex EveryDay Credit Card, to premium options, such as the American Express Platinum Card. Each card earns points at different rates depending on the category of spending – for example, restaurants, groceries, flights, or travel booked through AmEx Travel.

Depending on how you travel and spend, you can accumulate a significant amount of Membership Rewards points, which can then be transferred to Marriott Bonvoy or other travel partners. This flexibility is one of the main benefits of using AmEx cards for everyday spending and travel purchases.

According to NerdWallet, Bonvoy points are worth 0.9 cents, and AmEx points are worth 1.2 cents each. That makes the transfer not very profitable. But AmEx does offer a transfer bonus from time to time, the last time we saw one was occasionally, American Express offers transfer bonuses that can enhance the value of your points. For example, in March 2025, AmEx provided a 25% bonus on transfers to Marriott Bonvoy, effectively increasing the transfer ratio to 1,000 AmEx points yielding 1,250 Bonvoy points. This can make transferring points more worthwhile, especially if you’re planning a stay where the points cost is favorable compared to the cash price.

Transfer Chase Points to Marriott

The partnership with Chase makes it possible to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Marriott in a 1:1 ratio. The transfer is instant and must be done in 1,000 point increments.

Marriott points are worth 0.9 cents each, and Chase points are worth 2.1 cents, so this transfer, like the transfer from Amex, is not profitable. Chase also occasionally makes offers for transferring points with a bonus; the last offer, which was valid until March 31, offered a 50% bonus. Thus changing the transfer ratio of 1000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points = 1500 Marriott Bonvoy points.

Like AmEx, Chase has more favorable rewards transfer options, so you have to decide how much you need the Marriott Bonvoy points.

Chase has many credit cards that earn points. The most sophisticated point-hoarders use multiple cards that combine to cover most spending categories and maximize rewards. You can learn more about this in the article – Chase Trifecta: Three Cards That Maximize Your Spending Benefits.

Transfer Bilt Rewards Points to Marriott

The Marriott Bonvoy has become the 15th Bilt Rewards point transfer partner. This program is unique in that it allows you to earn points on your rental payments.

The conversion rate of Bilt points to Marriott Bonvoy points is 1:1. The following offer is also valid: for every 20,000 Bilt points transferred in one transaction, you will receive 5,000 additional Marriott Bonvoy points.

40,00050,000
60,00075,000

Transfer Bilt Rewards Points to Marriott

Usually, the points are transferred immediately, but the transfer may take up to 48 hours.

To transfer points, you need to link your Bilt Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy accounts in the Bilt app.

NerdWallet values Bilt Rewards points at 2 cents per point. Therefore, transferring to Marriott points is not the best option either, it is much more profitable to transfer points to airline partners and use them to pay for an award ticket. But again, it all depends on your goals. If you have a specific redemption in mind and it justifies your expenses, then transfer your points and relax in the expected Marriott hotel.

Transferring Marriott Bonvoy Points to Airline Partners (Miles & More)

Transferring Marriott Bonvoy Points to Airline Partners

One powerful feature of Marriott Bonvoy is the ability to convert Marriott points into airline miles. In fact, Marriott has a huge roster of airline partners – about 39 airlines in total – making it a go-between currency for many frequent flyer programs. You can transfer Marriott points to United, American, Delta, and many international carriers. However, the transfer ratios and value proposition vary, so you’ll want to understand the details before moving your Marriott stash into an airline program.

There are a couple of important wrinkles to this:

  • 60K Point Bonus: Marriott rewards you for transferring in bulk. For every 60,000 Marriott points you transfer, Marriott will throw in an extra 5,000 bonus airline miles (on most programs). Effectively, instead of 60k converting to 20k miles (at 3:1), you’ll get 25,000 miles. This improves the effective rate to 2.4:1 (or “3:1.25” as Marriott sometimes frames it). For example, transferring 60,000 Marriott to American Airlines AAdvantage would net you 25,000 AA miles in total. If you had 120,000 Marriott points, you could split it into two transfers of 60k each and get 25k miles + 25k miles (50k total).
  • United Airlines bonus: Marriott has a special partnership with United (the RewardsPlus program). When you transfer Marriott points to United MileagePlus, you get an even bigger bump. 60,000 Marriott points convert into 30,000 United miles. That’s 10k bonus miles on 60k (instead of the usual 5k). It works out to an effective 2:1 ratio for United, which is much more generous. So if you’re converting a large chunk, United gives the best return for your Marriott points among airline partners.

Air New Zealand (Airpoints)≈200 Bonvoy : 1 Airpoint60,000 → ~300 AirpointsSee the analysis here

Aside from United’s extra perk, all other airline transfers follow the 3:1 (with 5k bonus per 60k) structure, with one exception: a few airline programs have their own conversion metrics. For example, the Air New Zealand program uses Airpoints, which have a completely different value – for 60,000 Marriott points you get only 300 Airpoints, but is this 200:1 ratio so bad?
Let’s look into it.

Transfer Points to Air New Zealand

At first glance, when you see a ratio of 200:1, it’s enough to make any points lover cringe. It feels like you’re throwing your hard-earned points into a black hole. But is it really that bad? Well, like most things in the world of points and miles, it depends on the context.

Let’s break it down. Each Airpoints Dollar (APD) is pegged directly to the New Zealand Dollar (1 APD = 1 NZD). And with the NZD trading at around 0.60 USD, those 300 APD you’d get from transferring 60,000 Marriott points are worth roughly $180 USD. Not exactly thrilling, right?

Now, here’s where things get interesting. Air New Zealand still operates on a distance-based award chart, and premium cabin redemptions can get pricey in terms of APD. For example, if you’re eyeing a business class seat from Auckland to Los Angeles — a route just over 10,000 km — you’ll need 1,600 APD.

To get those 1,600 APD through Marriott transfers? Brace yourself — you’d need a hefty 320,000 Marriott points. On paper, that sounds outrageous. But let’s compare it to reality: if you were to buy that same business class ticket with cash, it would set you back around $5,398 NZD, or roughly $3,239 USD.

image 7

Here’s where savvy travelers pause and think: “Wait a minute…”

If you value Marriott points at the typical 0.9 cents each, those 320,000 points are worth about $2,880 USD. So, by transferring points instead of paying cash, you’re effectively saving around $359 USD. Suddenly, that terrifying 200:1 ratio doesn’t look quite as dreadful.

Of course, this isn’t some magical redemption — you’re still using a mountain of points for a single flight, and truthfully, there are far better uses for Marriott Bonvoy points in most cases. But here’s the key takeaway: sometimes, even a “bad” transfer rate can serve you well if the circumstances align.

Maybe you’re sitting on a stash of Marriott points with no hotel stays planned. Maybe cash fares are sky-high, and you just need to make that trip happen without draining your wallet. Or perhaps you’re a few APD short of a dream redemption and transferring points is the simplest fix. Whatever the case, flexibility is the real value here.

Always run the numbers before dismissing an option outright. In the world of points, value is often hidden where you least expect it.

Best Uses vs. Poor Uses of Marriott -> Airline Transfers

Now, is it a good idea to transfer Marriott points to airline miles? The answer: usually only in specific situations. Here’s the value perspective:

  • Poor value for general use: Marriott points are typically worth around 0.7–0.8 cents each when used for hotel stays. Airline miles values vary by program, but let’s say an airline mile might be worth ~1.3–1.5 cents on average (just an example; it can be more for first class, less for economy). Converting at 3:1 means you’re effectively giving up ~3 * 0.8 = 2.4 cents worth of Marriott points to get a mile worth maybe 1.3¢ – not a great trade in a vacuum. Even with the 5k bonus, 60k Marriott (worth ~$420 at 0.7¢ each) becomes 25k miles. Those 25k miles would need to be worth at least 1.68¢ each to break even on value, and often they’re not unless used very strategically. This is why it’s often said that transferring Marriott to airlines is not the best value use of your points.
  • Aspirational or last-resort uses: On the other hand, Marriott points can be a fantastic tool for topping off an airline account for a specific high-value award. For example, perhaps you’re planning a business-class flight to Europe using Air France/KLM Flying Blue and you’re 10,000 miles short – moving 30,000 Marriott points over (to get 10k miles) could unlock a $2,500 flight. In that case your Marriott points effectively got ~8¢ per point value via the airline redemption – a home run! Another scenario: American Airlines AAdvantage miles are hard to acquire from credit card points (no direct Amex/Chase transfers), but Marriott is one of the few ways to get AA miles outside of flying or credit card spend. If you have a lot of Bonvoy points, you can convert to AA to book that first class award seat. Similarly, Marriott is an option for other programs like Alaska MileagePlan or Japan Airlines JAL miles which aren’t widely supported by bank points. These aspirational redemptions – like international first-class flights or unique partner redemptions – are where converting Marriott points to miles can make sense.

How To Redeem Marriott Points for Airline Miles

The mechanics of redeeming Bonvoy points for airline miles are quite simple:

  1. Log in to your Marriott Bonvoy account online. Go to the “Redeem Points” or “Use Points” section and find the options for transferring or converting points to miles (sometimes under the heading “Travel Partners” or “Transfer Points to Miles).
  2. Marriott will display a list of all partner airlines. Select the program you want (for example, United, American, Delta, etc.). You’ll need the frequent flyer number for the account you’re transferring to, and it must match your name.
  3. Enter the number of Marriott points you want to convert. Remember the 60k miles – it’s best to transfer in 60,000 increments if possible to get the bonus miles. (If you don’t have the full 60,000 miles to transfer, you can certainly transfer a smaller amount, but you won’t get the extra 5,000 miles). Marriott usually requires a minimum transfer amount (most commonly 3,000 points for airline transfers, but it can vary by airline).
  4. Confirm the transfer. Transfers are not instantaneous – they can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the partner airline.

It’s best to use airline point-to-mile transfers to get coveted rewards that are otherwise out of reach – especially if Marriott is your only quick source of a particular airline’s miles.

Transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to Starbucks Rewards Stars

Points are transferred at the following conversion rate: 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy points = 100 Starbucks Stars (a 10:1 ratio), in increments of 10 points, with a minimum amount of 1,000 points.

You can transfer up to 50,000 Marriott points per day to your linked Starbucks Rewards account.

Although a transfer option exists, it is generally not recommended.

  • Marriott points value: Approximately 0.7 to 0.9 cents per point.
  • Starbucks Stars Value: Usually around 2 cents per star.

How to Transfer

  1. Link Accounts: Ensure your Marriott Bonvoy and Starbucks Rewards accounts are linked.
  2. Initiate Transfer: Visit the Marriott-Starbucks partnership page and follow the prompts to transfer points.
  3. Processing Time: Transfers typically process within two business days.

While transferring Marriott points to Starbucks Stars is possible, it’s generally not the most value-efficient use of your points. However, in specific scenarios like expiring points or small balances, it can be a practical option.

Transferring Marriott Points Between Members (Person-to-Person)

What if you want to give some of your Marriott points to a friend or family member? Or combine points with your spouse so you can book an award stay together? Yes, you can transfer Marriott points to another person – Marriott Bonvoy allows free point transfers between members. This is often called “points sharing” or “points pooling,” and it’s a handy feature for families or friends. Here’s how it works and the rules you should know.

Marriott’s Member-to-Member Transfer Policy

Marriott’s policy is fairly generous for point transfers between accounts:

  • Any member to any member: You can transfer Marriott points to another Marriott Bonvoy member – it doesn’t have to be a family member or same household (Marriott used to require sharing an address in the old days, but not anymore). You just need the recipient’s name and Bonvoy account number.
  • No fee: Marriott does not charge any fee for this service. It’s free to share your points, which is great (some airlines charge for mileage transfers).
  • Minimum and increments: The minimum you can transfer is 1,000 points, and transfers must be in increments of 1,000 points. So you could send 1,000, 5,000, or 37,000 points – but not 750 or 12,345, for example.
  • Transfer limits: Each member can transfer out up to 100,000 points per calendar year to others. This is a cumulative total – e.g. you could send 100k to one person, or 50k to your spouse + 50k to your child, but once you hit 100k transferred out in a year, that’s the cap. On the receiving side, a member can receive up to 500,000 points per year from other accounts. These limits are pretty high; most regular travelers won’t need to transfer that much in a year.
  • Account age requirement: Both the sender’s and receiver’s accounts need to be active for a certain time before a transfer can happen. Specifically, the accounts must be at least 30 days old with some qualifying activity (like earning or redeeming some points), or if there’s been no activity, then at least 90 days old.
  • How to:  You can find the “Transfer Points” option on the Marriott website (or in the app under your account profile). It may be in a section called “Share Points”. You’ll need to enter the recipient’s name, membership number, and the number of points you want to transfer, and then confirm. For security purposes, Marriott may send a confirmation code to your email or phone. Once confirmed, the transfer usually happens instantly or within a few minutes – your friend may need to log out and log back in to see the points, but it’s generally very fast.

Why and When to Transfer Marriott Points to Another Person

There are several scenarios when transferring points to another member makes sense:

Booking the same reward together: Let’s say you and your partner both have Marriott points, but neither of you has enough for the five-night stay you want. You can transfer points to one account (or vice versa) to combine them, and then make the reservation from that account.

Utilizing elite status: Perhaps your friend has a Marriott Bonvoy elite status (say, Platinum or Titanium) that gives you valuable perks (upgrades, free breakfast, late check-out). If you’re planning to stay together, you can transfer your points to a friend’s account so they can book a room using their status – that way you both get the perks during your stay.

Helping family: If a family member is a few thousand points short of redemption, you can make up for it by donating a few points instead of buying points or skipping redemption.

Avoiding expiration: Marriott points typically expire after 24 months of inactivity. If someone you know has expiring points and can’t redeem them, you can transfer them to another account (as any activity, including transfers, resets the clock on the sender’s account and the recipient’s account also receives a new transaction).

Please note: you cannot transfer certificates for a free night at Marriott, only points.

Conclusion

Marriott Bonvoy’s extensive network of transfer partners provides flexibility for members to maximize the value of their points. Transferring points to airline programs can be especially beneficial when redeeming for award travel, especially with partners that offer favorable redemption rates. Conversely, transferring points to the Marriott Bonvoy program from credit card programs is a strategic way to accumulate points for hotel stays. However, you should carefully evaluate transfer rates and potential redemption costs!
